Industrial Smart Screws

Fraunhofer Released Screws That Send Notifications When They Become Loose

'Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Internet Technologies' (Fraunhofer) announced a set of smart screws that, when paired with washers, can automatically detect when they loosen. These screws are intended for use in large-scale industrial structures like bridges, ramps, stairways, or other architectural developments. When the screw is installed and the washer is tightened, the washer automatically determines the force it is receiving from three points on its head. If this pressure reduces by a certain degree, the screw and washer will send a notification to a nearby base station which can be monitored remotely via an internet connection.

The Fraunhofer smart screws and washers are currently available in the M18 size, however, the company announced the creation of M20 and M36-size screws in the near future. These smart screws are an excellent solution for maintenance personnel in large cities around the world. Rather than having to manually drive out and check the strength of screws periodically, staff can rely on these screws to send a notification if service is needed.
