Eye-Tracking Car Headlights

The Vauxhall/Opel Smart Headlights Aim At Where The Driver is Looking

Vauxhall/Opel is devleoping smart headlights that aim themselves in a particular direction based on driver eye-tracking. Already in development for a couple of years now, this high-tech system doesn't merely alter the direction of the headlight beams but also manipulates beam intensity.

The system uses a camera that monitors important points on a driver's face such as the nose and eyes in order to detect their line of sight. Peripheral infrared sensors and photo-diodes are used to scan the driver's eyes more than 50 times a second.

These smart headlights can work with any driver behind the wheel without having to be individually calibrated for each driver. It's a system that is marvelous both in its technological grounding and in the impact it could have in terms of improving safety on the roads.
