The Mork-Ulnes Ski Cabin Structure is Coated in Tar to Protect Against Snow

The ski cabin structure designed by Mork-Ulnes Architects is located in northern California and features a unconventional coating of black tar across the exterior of the premise that acts as protection against the snow. The tar coats the timber wood on all four sides used to create the facade, as a preventative measure to protect the wood from damage from large snowfalls.

The chalet is a modern take on a traditional ski cabin with large scale windows, two levels and a geometric shape. The home is located on an elevated slope that often receives a large amount of snow in the winter season. The tar used on the timber is inspired by a Norwegian technique that keeps the wood weather resistant as well as insect-proof by blending the abode into the landscape.
