The Skamlingsbanken Visitor Center Will Have a Grassy Roof

The Skamlingsbanken Visitor Center is a new public resource set to be built on the outskirts of Sjolund, in the south of Denmark. The design for the building, created by CEBRA Architects, makes use of the surrounding landscape so extensively that the building itself almost disappears. That's because the Skamlingsbanken Visitor Center will be almost entirely beneath the rolling hills of the area.

The center features and earthen berm and a green roof covered in grass. Not only does this cause it to blend in to the landscape, but it also serves as an ecologically friendly method for insulating the building.

The location choice for the Skamlingsbanken Visitor Center is not a coincidental one. Rising 113 meters above sea level, the hills of the area are the highest point in the region of South Jutland, and they have thus been a historic meeting point.
