OOZN Design installed undulating layers of timber to create a cave-like interior for the Six Degrees Cafe, an intimate coffee shop located in Jakarta, Indonesia. The cafe is named after the six degrees of separation theory, which suggests that everything in the world is linked in six or less steps.
That being said, the architects explain, "The owner envisioned his cafe to be a meeting place for friends socializing over a good cup of coffee. The design brief was simple: to make the cafe memorable and cozy."
In order to achieve this, the architects positioned the timber slats at 150-millimeter intervals, effectively covering the wall and ceiling to create spatially differentiated heights. Apart from a black rear wall and refined concrete flooring, the majority of the cafe is enclosed in the timber layers for a strong visual effect.
