Philippines-born, New Jersey-based artist Gregory Halili cites the wildlife and vegetation of his birthplace as inspiration for his work.
His latest series, a collection of mother of pearl shell skulls, unites the human form with the natural world. He finds, carves and then oil paints the gold and black-lip mother of pearl shells. The project speaks to the cyclical nature of birth, death and rebirth found in nature. Humans are finite, mortal beings, yes, but we are recycled back into the earth and made new again after we die, a beautiful and entirely natural process.
The Mother of Pearl Shell Skulls will be exhibited at Silverlens Galleries in Manila and Nancy Hoffman Gallery in NYC.
