Starbucks Taps Artist Shadé Akanbi for a New Drinkware Design

Starbucks has partnered with multidisciplinary designer Shadé Akanbi to launch a limited-edition drinkware capsule celebrating African-inspired artistry and cultural storytelling. This exclusive collaboration introduces a trio of culturally inspired cups, each reflecting Akanbi’s signature aesthetic and deep appreciation for traditional textiles and global craftsmanship.

Leading the collection is the Berber Diamond Cold Cup with Straw Charm, which draws inspiration from the intricate patterns found in traditional Moroccan rugs. Accentuated by a batik bone bead-style charm, the design is one of a kind. The second release, a 12-ounce tumbler, is adapted from Akanbi’s popular "Pattern of the Dae" social media series and pays homage to the vibrant symbolism of Ghanaian Kente cloth. Rounding out the capsule is the Batik Beads Stainless Steel Cold Cup, which features imagery of bone beads set against a metallic bronze background inspired by jewelry traditions from Senegal, Mexico, and Kenya.

"In my art, there are so many little pieces of me and stories of places I’ve been," Akanbi said. "I hope this collection sparks the curiosity to travel more or taps into a memory, like it does for me."
