This Plate-Checking Technology Supports Good Nutrition

Ensuring proper senior nutrition is of paramount importance in care homes, so this new technology would make it easier for staff when it comes to getting residents the nutrition they need. The technology works by taking photos of plates before and after being served to a person, and will utilize artificial intelligence (AI) to detect how much has been consumed. Caregivers will be notified if the person hasn't eaten enough or if their diet is nutritionally imbalanced to help them make corrective changes.

The senior nutrition technology is currently being developed through a partnership between the University of Waterloo in Canada, theSchlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging and the University Health Network. The technology is claimed to be within 5% accurate compared to caregiver accuracy which is rated at 50%.
