Plant-Based Water Filters

'Drop by Drop' Uses a Self-Contained Filtration System to Purify Water

Royal College of Art and Design graduate, Pratik Ghosh, created 'Drop by Drop,' a self-contained filtration system meant to purify waste water.

Drop by Drop uses plant life to purify water that can later be collected and consumed. The device consists of a glass dome housing the plants, a pump to control air movement, a drain for water collection and a light to activate photosynthesis and transpiration. Waste water is deposited into the device and drawn into the plant through the roots. The water then escapes the plant through the leaves and enters the air of the unit as vapor. A pump pulls the water from the air and condenses it, where it is then drained from the device as distilled water.

While this process takes quite some time, Ghosh believes this self-contained filtration system could be applied in a larger scale as a way to help reduce water consumption and recycle water at home.
