With an increase in shootings at educational institutions, many architects search for some resolve and protection through strategic concrete implementation of their skills-- as a result, many seek to reimagine the traditional school layout. American practice Tower Pinkster is the latest example of that as it optimizes a high school layout in Michigan to work to "reduce the number of student casualties in the event of a terror attack."
The institution boasts curved hallways that limit the line of sight and is divided into segments that are separated by "fire doors" that can be directly operated by a button. Moreover, Tower Pinkster install intermittent barriers "for schoolchildren to hide behind" in case of an attack. In addition, classrooms will have an internal locking mechanism, windows will be bullet-proof, and there will be short blockades behind classroom doors that can also provide cover.
