This School Building is a Vibrant Educational Space

Hamburg-based office PFP Architekten is responsible for designing the 'Scuola di Piazza delle Erbe,' a school building featuring overlapping boxes that protrude towards a piazza in Genoa, Italy.

Up until this assignment, the plot had been left vacant since its bombing during the Second World War. The city's council commissioned the building to accommodate 500 primary and secondary school students.

The site is located at an intersection of two narrow streets, limiting the position of the two-storey volume. The lower portion contains offices, a canteen and a music room, while the upper levels contain classrooms that thrust over one edge and continue around the rear of the building. The architects explain, "The school building is composed of two overlapping volumes: broken geometries, with a movement of the facades that also corresponds to a distribution choice and an optimization of the classrooms' exposure.
