The Sayaka Maruyama Sakura series is inspired by a mixture of classical Japanese elements and Surrealist finishes. Present in the series is a topless woman, manipulated here by way of Maruyama's violet and red lighting schemes.
Found within Sakura are an assortment of ornate bouquets. The flowers jut out in various directions, standing out even more than they would ordinarily by way of the dark backdrops. These and the color-based features stem from Maruyama's will to mix both Eastern and Western motifs as she describes her work as a "contradictory contemporary understandings of Japanese notions of beauty, from both Western and Eastern perspectives." The concept of aging is also present as the muted tones are reminiscent of antique artwork.
