Scientists are Testing a Robot That Will Perform Soft-Tissue Surgery

Scientists are saying that a future of a robotic surgeon in the operating room is starting to become a reality. Although human supervision will likely always be necessary, the robots would increase accuracy during surgery and reduce detrimental human errors.

The design has been dubbed the 'Smart Tissue Autonomous Robot,' or "STAR." When scientists tested the device on pig skin, STAR proved successful in completing a "supervised autonomous surgery." In comparisons, the bot was shown to be superior to manual surgery.

Although the robotic surgeon is highly capable, the machines are wholly dependent on a doctor's capability of correctly using it. A series of robots to perform surgery are continuously being tested, increasingly demonstrating a future of safer and more efficient medical treatments.
