Redesigning Traffic Lamps

Cubic Driving Lights by Art Lebedev

Given that the shape of traffic lights hasn’t really changed all that much since they were first invented, it comes as no surprise that this square traffic light design concept has been put out there.

According to the designer, Art Lebedev, the lit sections were originally round because it allowed the spherical bulb inside to light the glass evenly. However, modern traffic lights use superbright light diodes that can be arranged in any way.

Circle, square, meh… surely there’s room for more creativity here. Bring on the apple-shaped traffic lights in New York City, and the Opera House shaped traffic lights in Sydney.
