Mental Illness Rescue Drones

'Project Lifesaver' Uses Drones to Locate Patients Who Wander Off

Project Lifesaver is a non-profit initiative that will use Lockheed Martin's Indago drones to help locate people with cognitive disorders that wander away from home.

People with autism, Alzheimer's disease and other cognitive conditions can be prone to wandering away from home and injuring themselves. With Project Lifesaver, these patients can be registered and made to wear a tracking device. In the event that they go missing, public safety agencies and drones are used to track them down. The drone itself is lightweight and collapsible and can fly for 45 minutes at a time, making it convenient for this purpose.

Drones have long been tipped for a wide variety of search and rescue, but Project Lifesaver shows that their applications can be creatively broadened to have a greater impact than ever imagined.
