Criminal Cafeteria Staff

Convicts Work at the Tihar Food Court as Part of Prisoner Rehabilitation

A jail in New Delhi is having its inmates serve food as part of their prisoner rehabilitation. The Tihar Food Court is exclusively staffed with convicted criminals who make and serve the food. The vegetarian cafeteria is just the latest of the Tihar Jail initiatives, which in the past included the Tihar Jail Factory and a TJ brand to market convict-made products.

This prisoner rehabilitation effort involves giving the criminals meaningful work experience as well as contact with the public. Featuring traditional Indian cuisine, the restaurant is only staffed with those who held a completely clean record since behind bars and have less than two years of their sentence to serve. Inmates can travel to work unsupervised by foot or bicycle and are paid for their work.
