Pothole-Detecting Car Systems

Jaguar Land Rover's Pothole Alert Identifies Wretched Potholes

Pothole Alert is a high-tech system, developed by Jaguar Land Rover's Advanced Research Centre, that uses connected car systems to monitor the road and locate potholes. The system is capable of monitoring the road in real-time, identifying potholes and adjusting suspension in a matter of just milliseconds.

The Pothole Alert system makes considerable use of the MagneRide semi-active suspension control system, which uses magnetic particles suspended in a damping fluid. This allows for the use of sensors that allow the vehicle to profile the road surface under the wheels in order to find potholes, raised manholes and damaged drain covers.

Potholes cause numerous accidents on the road, both minor and fatal. The Pothole Alert system uses modern technology to help mitigate an age-old problem for drivers.
