Springtime brings out one of the biggest seasonal foes that people face -- pollen -- but Swiss art director Regine Cavicchioli and two of her students from the Zurich University of the Arts have created pollen lamps as a tribute to the pesky allergens. Though the effects of pollen might not be the most attractive (red eyes, runny noses, and ample sneezing won't win any design contests,) the team has used pollen on a microscopic level for pleasing design inspiration.
The 3D-printed pollen lamps are each based off of a different pollen particulate. There are currently six lamps in the series, called Ambrosia, Fraxinus, Betula, Helianthus, Taraxacum, and Poaceae. These are pollen particles from plants as wide ranging as birch trees, sunflowers, grass, and the notoriously allergenic ragweed. The lamps are all available for purchase through a site purpose-built for the project.
