The 'Podkowa House' Works with Trees in the Area

When Jakub Szcz?sny was designing the Podkowa House, there were a few challenges that required some creativity to overcome. The main issue were the trees in the area, and the fact that the architecture firm could not simply cut them down to make room. Instead Szczesny was forced to come up with a design that incorporated these elements in a sustainable way.

The building was lifted up in the end to make room for the roots of the trees, which weave their way throughout the site. Also, "the basement’s rooms are retracted in plan to accommodate the roots’ expansion into the soil," according to DesignBoom. This is key considering that they will shift over time, and potentially could cause damage to the Podkowa House. Photo Credits: designboom, centrala.net.pl
