Ying Gao is no stranger to the world of interactive design. Previously, Gao has debuted collections such as the ‘Ying Gao: Art, Fashion and Technology’ exhibit at the Musee National des Beaux-arts du Quebec. However, Gao’s latest collection focuses on celebrity-saturated media culture with his new line ‘Playtime,’ which could be beneficial for any celebrity who’s ever been repeatedly hounded by the paparazzi.
The dresses are able to detect when a lens is being focused on them, and respond accordingly: "When one attempts to capture an image of the dress, using a photo or video camera the garment transforms and fragments, it deconstructs and becomes soft and vague, unfocused," says Gao. Although some celebrities have created a career out of their public, tabloid person – Lindsay Lohan, Kim Kardashian – some celebs are interested in protecting their privacy and their modesty.
Gao’s dresses thwart photographs by distorting or blurring the image, making them essentially un-publishable. However, the dresses are not necessarily for public consumption, as Gao has no current plans to make the line available commercially. From a fashion point of view, these dresses are dainty and light, despite packing a whole lot of technological punch.
