Modular Vertical Planting Systems

This Chinese Office Building's Walls Were Fitted with Plants

Chinese architectural firm Shenzhen Ingameoffice implemented a unique vertical planting system in its refurbishment of an office building in the city of Shenzhen. The modular system allows for plants to be moved around.

The walls consist of huge grids of sealed, interconnected piping designed so that plants can easily be slotted into them. The piping allows for water and nutrients to be pumped into the plants

The vertical planting system is installed on the west side of the office building, allowing the plants to benefit from exposure to sunlight in the afternoon. The system also provides shade for the offices when the sun is at its most intense, saving on air-conditioning requirements.

Aside from being visually pleasing, plants are thought to have a positive mental effect on office workers. Moreover, they help to 'clean' the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen.
