Brooklyn-based design studio Fort Standard designed the unique and minimalist Planar side table. This idea first came to light when Fort Standard's Gregory Buntain encountered a thick piece of travertine material at a stone supplier's shop. This slab of material evoked Buntain's thoughts of the Barcelona Pavillion by Mies Van Der Rohe due to the travertine usage to construct the walls and benches there. The material became the main spotlight of the project, with the goal in mind to create a piece where the travertine would shine.
The material's thickness is what formulates the entire table structure, with the final result of three intersecting plans to serve a function while delivering structure. The Planar side table is comprised of two stone "tenons" that intersect at the top, instead of having just one to create perfect squares.
