To combat a shortage of pilots, JetBlue launched its own pilot program called 'Gateway Select' that is described as an "an innovative talent pathway for those seeking to become pilots at JetBlue."
This special training program is designed to take those with a desire to fly, even if they have no experience, and teach them how to become pilots for the airline. As part of the program, applicants undergo a four-year education that teaches them everything from meteorology and aerodynamics to the inner workings of aircraft systems.
So far, JetBlue's Gateway Select has been successful at transforming grocery store clerks, accountants and baggage handlers into pilots. JetBlue's Warren Christie, JetBlue senior vice president of safety, security and air operations says that Gateway Select "opens up aviation careers to individuals that otherwise might never have had the opportunity."
