Somber Stranger Self-Portraits

Photographer Benoit Paille Turns Cameras on Tourists

What happens when you give a vacationing stranger your camera to take a self portrait? Photographer Benoit Paillé explores this through his ‘Tourist self-portrait’ photo shoot. The collection of photographs are as real as it gets, completely random strangers, totally impromptu pictures and all set on a beach. My favorite portrait is of the one guy smiling in the series -- I’m not sure if they were given a direction and told not to smile.

Although these people are vacation, they seem to have forgotten their lovely background. They are on sandy beach, with a sunny sky and clear blue waters as far as the eye can see. And yet they all look like they spent all day stuck in an air-conditioned office. Still, their sad expressions add something unique to this vacation summer swim shoot. The beauty created by photographer Benoit Paillé lies in the contrast of the setting and their expressions.
