It's obvious that Sydney-based photographer Petrina Hicks has a commercial background. One needs only to glance at the polished, hyper-stylized photos that make up her latest series, 'The Hippy and the Snake,' to understand that Hicks has advertising experience.
What's more interesting than the glossy, campaign-inspired photography, however, is the content. With 'The Hippy and the Snake,' Hicks explores the complex, troublesome relationship that women have had with snakes, in literature and art, since our Fall from Eden.
Though biblical in origin, the project is incredibly modern in its look and feel. Hicks' subject wanders amidst a tropical wasteland, perhaps an ode to the Garden itself, looking naive and innocent. Though beautiful, the environment is laden with potential danger at every turn, possessing the "ambiguity and duality" that Hicks strives for.
