Mythic Weaving Installations

'Penelope' is Inspired by the Greek Myth in Homer's 'Odyssey'

'Penelope' is an intricate and enigmatic installation by Brazilian artist Tatiana Blass. Based on the myth of Penelope from Homer's 'Odyssey,' the installation depicts the creation or destruction of Odysseus' burial shroud, which Penelope weaved as a testament to the power of love.

Penelope is on display at the Chapel of Morumbi in Sao Paolo, Brazil. In the exhibit, a red woolen carpet runs from the entrance of the chapel up to a loom. When it reaches the loom, it appears to explode into a matrix of individual wool threads. These tangled threads extend through holes in the chapel's walls to the lawn outside, forming a dense brush of wool on the ground and in the trees.

In the myth of Penelope, it is unclear whether Penelope is creating or destroying the shroud, and the direction in which the carpet's wool flows is equally unclear in the exhibit.
