Red Helix Overpasses

The Santiago Calatrava 'Peace Bridge' is Twistingly Sculptural

Built in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the Peace Bridge officially celebrated its unveiling this past weekend to a surprisingly large crowd and even a cheer or two. Although it was met with much criticism from locals due to its high cost, the Peace Bridge will now serve as a convenient way for pedestrians and cyclists to pass over the Bow River.

Designed by Santiago Calatrava, the Peace Bridge will also act as an iconic landmark. Its remarkable red helix design is utterly captivating. A sculptural tunnel, it stretches over the body of water like a futuristically webbed apparatus. Created in collaboration with City of Calgary and Graham Infrastructure, the Peace Bridge boasts a twisting, glass enclosed steel frame that offers protection from the wind, snow and other extreme elements of Calgary weather.
