Wind-Powered Commuter Trains

The Nederlandse Spoorwegen Passenger Trains will be Emission-Free

Being that 600,000 Dutch passengers travel by train everyday, Nederlandse Spoorwegen will now operate passenger trains that are completely powered by wind energy to eliminate emissions.

100% of the energy needs of the commuter trains on the rails will be powered by the renewable energy source beginning in January of this year. The new initiative is the world's first when it comes to shifting rail power towards sustainable methods. The shift is the result of an agreement between Nederlandse Spoorwegen and Dutch electricity company Eneco.

Explaining the new move to make the passenger trains a greener form of transportation, Ton Boon of Nederlandse Spoorwegen said, "With this we lead by example: this contract will boost the production of green energy, we hope that other companies will follow this in their coming contracts."
