Palm Leaf-Made Sandals

O'Neill Footwear Uses Fallen Indian Palm Leaves to Reuse Material

O'Neill Footwear's 'The Tree of Life Project' allows the Californian company to craft palm leaf sandals by paying locals in India to collect the fallen material so that it can be reused.

With this, each of the shoes has a unique appearance that comes from the intricacies found in each palm leaf, changing the color and pattern and ensuring that none are exactly alike. The project is a result of a collaboration with Tjeerd Veenhoven, a material designer who reportedly "spent four years researching the leaves for O’Neill Footwear."

With The Tree of Life Project, the company seeks to create a product that's both environmentally friendly and economically beneficial to the Indian locals it employs. Two different variations of the palm leaf sandals are available, one of which features a comfortable suede strap while the other has a tanned-leather cross design.
