Glamuzina Paterson Architects designed the 'Blackpool House,' a modest, one-bedroom home located on Waiheke Island, New Zealand.
The monolithic structure is surrounded by a dense, forested landscape. The architects did not want to impose on the natural topography, but work with it. The vertical composition of the home was chosen as a response to the landscape. The descending, winding path through the tree canopy leads to a subdued porch. Though the entry is confining at first, it opens up to reveal a double-height space ahead. Inside, the home is comprised of four split-levels and two decks, intended to forge a relationship with the site.
The sculpted roof is designed to acknowledge the unique characteristics of the site. The exterior is clad in black metal for continuity purposes, as well as to complement the landscape.
