'High and Low' by Olivia Locher Takes a Dark Approach

Do not try to adjust your computer's brightness levels while viewing these photographs -- the dim lighting in Olivia Locher's 'High and Low' series is completely intentional.

The NYC-based photographer explores the world of darkness in this ongoing series, playing with still photography, models, and natural environments to see how different, mysterious, and almost menacing everyday objects can become when the light is sucked out of the photo. My favorite piece from the series is an outdoor forest scene that looks like it was taken straight out of a nightmare, with branches and roots that turn into angry and aggressive limbs.

The dark is a place where a person's imagination is able to run wild, regardless of age, and this is captured perfectly in Olivia Locher's 'High and Low' series.
