Flood-Fighting Urban Concepts

The Next Tokyo Concept Includes a Hyperloop & a Mile-High Skyscraper

Next Tokyo is an incredibly ambitious concept, put together by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates and Leslie E. Robertson Associates, that completely reimagines the future of the Tokyo Bay. Among other things, this concept includes a Hyperloop transportation system, a mile-high skyscraper and high-tech flood defences.

Imagined for completion in 2045, Next Tokyo comprises a number of artificial islands protected by complex flood defence systems. Residential towers would provide accommodation for around half a million people. The mile-high Sky Mile Tower would include accommodation as well as retail spaces, restaurants, hotels and open-air areas.

Next Tokyo would also be eco-friendly, and would harness kinetic energy captured from trains, in addition to solar power.

This urban concept is undoubtedly audacious, but features the kind of big thinking that the world's urban centers need to embrace to prepare for an uncertain future.
