Library-Traversing Book Trains

The New York Public Library Renovation Will Have a Book Conveyor

As part of the New York Public Library's multi-million dollar renovation, the facility is introducing a "book train" to bring materials from its storage facility up to the main buildings for readers. The conveyor system is both charming and practical, as it allows over 90 percent of research requests to be filled within minutes on-site.

According to a press release from the New York Public Library, the book train "consists of 24 individual red cars that run on rails and can seamlessly and automatically transition from horizontal to vertical motion." Each car in the book train will be able to transport 30 pounds of material at a time. The cars run on 950 feet of vertical and horizontal track, transporting books across 11 levels of the New York Public Library at a rate of 75 feet per minute.
