Fans of the game are inevitably familiar with the standard figurines on a chess board, yet Stefan Gougherty set out to add another layer to the logic game, producing the Negative Space Chess Set. You won't immediately recognize any of the pieces, for they have been thoroughly abstracted into intriguing geometric forms.
The designer dreamed up contemporary pawns, rooks, bishops, knights, queens and kings that greatly resemble ice cubes. These have been made for Geremia Design from transparent acrylic material and they encase forms like tubes, screws and bottles that are capable of different behaviors on the game board. The Negative Space Chess Set pieces are then filled in with yellow or black paint to distinguish one side from the other.
