Gianmaria Della Ratta is an Italian-born designer, now based in the Netherlands -- her latest project is entitled 'Mutatio' where she revives ancient tools to become kitchen tableware. She highlights a new world for ancient tools and references the evolution of the pieces. Della Ratta creates a line of different shapes to indicate the evolution of a stone itself, eventually turning the concept into a tea set, developed through 3D-printing processes. Each piece is modeled using a different stone to reference the digital evolution before it undergoes its 3D-printing.
The designer finds new creative processes to explore as each stone can take on new forms and isn't constrained to hold one specific purpose. She explains that a tool is not meant to embody one utilitarian task as it can challenge existing utility concepts. Mutatio experiments new ways of going about both the physical and virtual world and it features a cup, teaspoon, sugar tongs, filter, milk jug, sugar bowl and tea pot.
