Social Media Mood Maps

Researchers Graph Twitter Emotions Throughout the United States

Northeastern and Harvard researchers have created a mood map of the United States that shows the mood of Americans throughout the day. Using Twitter as a source, a word decoding system called Affective Norms for English Words (ANEW) is applied to over 300 million tweets to decode the mood of people based on their lingo.

The mood map shows a scale of color from green to red; red represents angry or negative emotions, while green represents happy ones.
