Arch-Shaped Supermarkets

The ‘Monumentalises Food’ is a Massive Enclosed Food Market

The Monumentalises Food is located in Rotterdam. The vast arch-mimicking building reveals a creatively decorated ceiling that is illustrated with over-sized pieces of food. The archway covers the entire market, which reaches 40 meters in height.

The interior of the archway is glazed over with a gloss-like finish. The food-inspired mural that cascades across the grand piece of architecture was created by Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam. As the first covered market in the Netherlands, the Monumentalises Food plays a historically important role.

In addition to the market, the large structure houses a total of 228 apartments. The apartments overlook a beautiful cityscape as well as the market below. Each apartment contains a window or balcony that allows the tenants to view the hustle and bustle of the busy market.
