Monumental Mountainside Retreats

This Modern Retreat Makes the Most of a Sloping Site

Blaze Makoid Architecture designed 'Martis Camp 506,' a modern retreat located in the Martis Camp development in Truckee, California.

The camp is a ski and golf resort, located between Truckee and Lake Tahoe, that spans over 2,000 acres. This residence in particular is situation on a heavily-wooded, sloping site that offers magnificent views of the Carson mountain range. The architects made sure to maintain the site through minimal grading and tree removal. The house further relates to its natural surroundings through the use of cedar sliding that blends with the landscape.

The house is arranged in an L-shaped floor plan that links the separate wings via a glazed, double-height entry and accompanying hallway. The steepness of the site is counteracted with a stone plinth that acts as a base. Finally, a cantilevered roof provides shade and shelter for outdoor living and dining areas.
