The Modern Christmas Tree Receives a Design Upgrade

The Modern Christmas Tree is a sculpture made from concentric acrylic rings.

The tree was originally designed by Lawrence "Bud" Stoecker in the 1960s. Lawrence spent the majority of his career as a designer and architect building modern, A-frame homes in the Rocky mountains. He built the tree for his family during a year when he couldn't afford to purchase one, and it quickly became a holiday favorite. Lawrence continually improved and refined upon the design throughout the 70s and 80s.

Since then, the tree has been decorated with a different assortment of crystals and ornaments each year. This year, Stoecker's grandson Matthew Bliss has breathed new life into the contemporary holiday tree, hanging it from the ceiling and illuminating it by a spotlight positioned below.
