These horrifying pictures taken by Mishka Henner show an aerial view of American industrial farming sites. Her series 'Feedlots' examines beef farm operations in a gruesome new light. The enormous waste sites create dangerous hydrogen sulfide fumes that can contaminate groundwater. Rather than landscapes, these areas look like large, gaping wounds.
Mishka Henner was looking at satellite images of oil fields when she made the discovery, not realizing what she saw at first. The photographer feels the destroyed American landscapes tell a larger story of cultural implications. She explains, "I think what the feedlots represent is a certain logic about how culture and society have evolved." The feedlots, to her, represent how we are.
This aerial photography will be on display in Montreal during the fall of 2013.
