Dating as far back to ancient Rome, marble has been a staple of building and furniture material until today, but Alex Seton has given the use of marble a modern twist. The Sydney, Australia-based Seton, who graduated from UNSW's College of Fine Arts in 1998, has created a series of common everyday clothes from Carrara marble. Looking at them from the pictures, you couldn't guess that they were made of a cold marmoreal substance even if their wardrobe might have suggested that they should vary their color preferences.
With works like crumpled hoodies, hanged-up jackets and folded t-shirts, complete with design names on them, Seton's marble art is remarkable for its intricately subtle detail, such as the fold lines and crease marks placed in realistic positions. According to Seton's biography, by using marble, "he interrogates and displaces our expectations through overturning historical and cultural constructs, challenging our optical perception and subverting the tradition of the material."
