Life-Sized Grain Sculptures

Saeri Kiritani Created a 100 Pound Statue Entirely Made Out of Rice

Selected as a winner in the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition, the self-portrait statue created by Saeri Kiritani is completely made out of rice and weighs 100 pounds.

When explaining why she chose to work with this edible medium, Kiritani states, "Rice is a part of my self-identity and part of how others identify me." Having grown up in Kanazawa, Japan, where rice was a main component of her diet and then moving to New York City where people associate rice with Asians, she is taking the phrase "you are what you eat" very literally.

Kiritani's self-sculpture made out of rice, over 1 million grains, shows the impact of culture on a person's identity.
