This furniture collection called 'The Plain Collection' by Dutch designer Maarten Baas is molded by hand using clay. The bumpy texture on the surface of the chairs, side tables and light fixtures is a mark left by Baas, who purposely molded it to leave a drastic effect. Under the clay formation is a metal wiring skeleton frame which, when hardened, leaves a texturized design that adds pizzazz to simple features.
The clay material creates a sturdy and robust structure without the need of a lacquered finish. The colors of the furniture pieces are not painted on, but rather mixed into the clay material before the molding process. Baas' signature is plastered all over the furniture as his fingers and hand molds are left to harden. The Plain Collection by Maarten Baas was featured during Milan Design Week 2012.
