Life is the Small Sun Flickering in the Dark transforms approximately 20,000 white sunflowers into an interactive nighttime artwork at teamLab Botanical Garden Osaka. The installation combines illuminated living plants with a soundscape by composer Hideaki Takahashi, allowing individual sunflowers to glow brighter and emit resonant tones when visitors or wildlife approach. Light and sound then ripple across the field, creating waves that connect movement throughout the landscape.
The installation explores the relationship between living organisms, technology, and human interaction by treating the sunflower field as a continuously changing environment rather than a static artwork.
