L'Etreinte by Elise Gabriel Turns from Liquid to Lovely Furniture

Material technologies have boomed in recent years, making charming projects like L'Etreinte by Elise Gabriel possible. The designer created this adorable chair, table, set of stools and series of lamps with quirky character in idiosyncratic forms, but what makes the collection most unique is the chemical change that the constituents underwent to become these fetching pieces of furniture.

The wooden frames of each piece have been constructed with intricate joints, and the very elements that the artist worked to soften. A substance called zelfo was used for this task. The 100-percent cellulose fiber material is made from recycled paper and textiles, and actually exists as 95 percent water in its liquid state. Applied when wet, the material dries and gradually hardens into place, giving L'Etreinte by Elise Gabriel its name: "the embrace."
