Country homes have always been respites from the bustling ravages of city life, but architect Lenka Mikova was faced with a problem when building a new country home in the Czech Republic. The appeal of country homes lies in their simplicity, but that simplicity also requires a certain degree of rustic disconnection. Lenka Mikova's design is thus an experiment in comfort versus authenticity.
The country home was built on the site of a heritage building owned by the client, but that building was in serious disrepair. Rather than trying to rebuild that site altogether, the architect opted to maintain many aspects of its vernacular without having to resort the occupants to a complete lack of modern amenities, ultimately providing them with the best of both worlds.
