Hyundai and Uncaged Develop Leather Alternative That Similar to Cowhide

Hyundai’s Cradle innovation arm is partnering with Uncaged Innovations to create a plant-based leather alternative for automotive interiors. Developed from wheat, soy, and corn proteins, the material replicates the fibrous structure of animal hide and even carries the scent of cowhide. Testing shows it can withstand heat up to 85°C for 500 continuous hours, approaching the 95°C threshold required for long-term vehicle use. Automakers are also exploring customizable scents, which could allow future car interiors to feature signature aromas that enhance brand identity.

Beyond performance, the eco-friendly benefits are significant. This plant-based leather is estimated to reduce the carbon footprint of conventional production by up to 95 percent while avoiding the imperfections and waste of natural hides. Manufactured with consistency, it offers cost advantages as well, with small-batch prices projected below $10 per square foot. For Hyundai, the project combines sustainability, durability, and sensory appeal in one innovative material.
