Lava From Mount Etna Was Used to Create This Range of Household Objects

Design duo Formafantasma created a collection of lava objects using samples from the eruption of Mount Etna in Sicily. The design team experimented with cooled lava from last years eruption and created the De Natura Fossilium collection.

The team collected samples of rock from Etna and nearby Stromboli, which they melted and then blew to create glass, wove into fibres and milled into various shapes. Stools, coffee tables and clocks were made from the samples. The collection brings both the landscape and the forces of nature together to create products for the home.

The most eye-catching piece in the collection is the clock. It looks like a crater or powdered stone and has bras hands that turn inside the depression. The contrast of earthy materials and shiny brass give the clock a look and feel that could only be achieved through using such abstract stones.
