Alternate concepts for colonizing cities have been addressed in the past, but Launchspire is one for the books. Launchspire not only proposes to structure future cities as spiralling skyscrapers, it also introduces a radical re-imagining of airports and aviation. The name of Launchspire was inspired by the fact that will launch through the center of the spiral tube for air transportation.
Designed by Henry Smith, Adam Woodward and Paul Attkins, Launchspire will also house a helical version of the classic urban grid complete with commercial, residential and green spaces. According to Yanko Design, the unusual structural solution of Launchspire "is born out of a desire to reinvigorate the "core and floor plate" model of high-rise buildings."
