Lakeside Restaurant by THAD SUP Atelier Uses Branching Timber Forms

The Lakeside Restaurant by THAD SUP Atelier is a 2,400-square-metre dining space located in Silk Road Friendship Park in Dingzhou, China. Designed by architects Song Yehao and Chen Xiaojuan, the building is defined by a timber structure where wooden columns rise and branch outward like trees, supporting a flowing roof system. The project uses glued laminated timber combined with digital prefabrication to achieve precise forms while maintaining a tactile, hand-finished surface quality.

The building is arranged along the shoreline with a sloped layout, placing enclosed service areas along the west facade and opening the remaining sides toward the lake. Visitors enter through a central arch that leads directly to the water, while extended roof overhangs create shaded corridors around the perimeter. The timber structure casts shifting shadows across the glass facade during the day, while interior lighting at night illuminates the full span of the branching framework.

Trend Themes

  1. Biomimetic Timber Structures — Biomimetic timber systems that replicate branching forms present potential for lightweight, expressive load-bearing structures with reduced steel dependency.
  2. Digital Prefabrication for Complex Forms — Integration of digital prefabrication with glulam production presents potential for precise, repeatable complex geometries and significantly shortened on-site assembly.
  3. Shaded Waterfront Hospitality Design — Lakeside designs that emphasize extended roof overhangs and seamless indoor–outdoor flow create opportunities for passive climate control and differentiated experiential dining.

Industry Implications

  1. Architecture and Construction — Timber-centric building strategies have potential to disrupt conventional structural engineering and supply chains by prioritizing mass timber and modular assembly methods.
  2. Prefabricated Building Manufacturing — Digital-prefab manufacturers combining CNC precision with hand-finished timber surfaces could capture demand for customizable, high-quality volumetric components.
  3. Hospitality and Leisure — Restaurant operators in waterfront contexts can leverage structural form as a core element of guest experience, enabling new branding and premium pricing models.
